The work consists of a feedback system between sound and light. Here the microphone is replaced by a phototransistor directly connected to a mixing desk through custom electronics and powered by the phantom power. The light signal coming from the surrounding environment flows as electric signal through the sensor and is transduced then into a sound signal. Within the mixing desk the signal is filtered through the so called no-input mixing technique, which confers to the work a specific aesthetic and a peculiar sonic behavior. The translation of light into sound is then reproduced by a subwoofer placed on the floor. This special speaker presents an aluminium membrane, and this element plays a peculiar role in the system: it becomes a blurred mirror which reflects the environmental direct light according to an unpredictable behavior due to both its texture and to the movement caused by the sound waves. This installation is a reinterpretation of the classic acoustic feedback system. Here the use of light introduces several differences and transforms the whole work in a totally different set-up, creating a highly dynamical, entirely analog system in constant search of balance, where all the events in the space contribute to the experience. The surrounding natural and artificial environment plays a crucial role; even the movements of clouds in the sky when the work is placed in a windowed room have the power to change the balance of the system, revealing us the invisible in a constant tension between silence and oscillations.
