This piece is generated by an algorithm based on an elementary, one-dimensional cellular automaton. The CA is set to rule 150 - with the simplest initial condition (single black cell) and variable update rate - in order to achieve an apparently random behavior, but it actually generates a fractal structure. This way the piece gets a constant variation but also cyclic repetitions. The algorithm controls a filter bank and a sampler: the input coming from a white noise generator is processed by an array of band-pass filters; the sampler triggers only one sample at different points. The picture graphically represents rule 69.
