The work consists of a feedback system between sound and light. The light signal coming from the tea-light flows as an electrical signal through the sensor and is subsequently transduced into an acoustic signal. Inside the mixer the signal is boosted by 48 additional Volts supplied by the phantom power and is then equalized by means of a low-pass filter. The translation of light into sound is then reproduced by a subwoofer placed on the ground.
This special speaker has an aluminum membrane that acts as a blurred mirror reflecting the light coming from the tea-light in a heterogeneous way. The displacement of the air due to the movement of the membrane generates the sound and continuously modifies the flame of the candle, producing a constant variation and keeping the process alive.
This translates into an unpredictable acoustic behavior.
This installation is a reinterpretation of the classic acoustic feedback system. Here the use of light introduces several differences and transforms the whole work in a totally different set-up, creating a highly dynamical, entirely analog system in constant search for balance, where all the events in the space contribute to the experience. The surrounding natural and artificial environment plays a key role. Even the variation of light in the room, or people who move air as they walk, have the power to change the balance and behavior of the system.A stock of tea-lights and matches are available to visitors: don’t let the work die.
